For the last 20 years Photoshop has been the leader in “digital image manipulation” but the reality today is that this description no longer does it justice, when it is capable of so much more.

Photoshop CS5 takes the time and frustration out of making precise image selections and masks, providing you with a faster way to extract subjects from their backgrounds and create realistic composites. New intelligent selection technology offers better edge detection and faster, more accurate masking results of complex subjects, like hair. Automatic color decontamination helps you eliminate background color around the edges of a selection, resulting in more seamless compositions when placing extracted subjects on new backgrounds.  Experienced Photoshop users know that the best selections are created by constantly adapting the selection technique for differences in the subject’s edges—one method for hair and another for the edge of a building.

I’m starting to like Google Chrome, it’s faster than Firefox and starting to get some nice addons. One thing that really bugs me though is the way when it’s in full screen mode it sits above your Vista toolbar irrelevant of whether you have the toolbar set to be on top or not.

I know its a small thing but having to minimise Chrome every time you want to get to another app just gets irritating. There’s a lot of people commenting on this in various forums and hopefully Google will come up with a fix soon, but in the meantime just hit F11 twice when chrome is in full screen mode and it then behaves itself.

Adobe’s upgrade system has historically allowed you to upgrade from the last 3 versions. This means if you have CS, CS2 or CS3 you can currently upgrade to CS4.

Today Adobe announced that CS5 is coming on the 12th of April. Once that is shipping and assuming Adobe maintain the same policy on upgrades then you will need CS2, CS3 or CS4 to upgrade to CS5. If you have CS it will most likely mean a whole new purchase, with no upgrade option.

I have just been having a play with the new Drupal 7 Alpha version and it is looking very nice. For those who haven’t come across Drupal it is an open source content management system built on PHP and MySQL and powers many popular sites such as Nasa, Warner Brothers, Greenpeace, Britney.com and of course Highlander.co.uk. ;-)

The first thing you will notice is that the whole install process has been given a make over and is a bit smoother (and simpler).  There are even options to include common modules with the install, and select languages at install, neither of which were there previously.

I came across a situation recently where the skype extension for firefox was messing up the layout of a page. Basically the page looked fine in all major browsers, however when you opened it up in firefox with the skype extension for firefox enabled it messed with the formatting of the page. If you have the same problem you can fix it simply by adding the following meta tag to your page:

<meta name=”SKYPE_TOOLBAR” content=”SKYPE_TOOLBAR_PARSER_COMPATIBLE” />

this effectively just blocks the skype extension from working. Once you have done this only phone numbers formatted with tags as follows will be recognised by the skype exxtension:
